Most players (like myself) use Hyperspeed 3.Head to the in-game cheats menu and insert the following code on your guitar to unlock Air Guitar Mode – Red & Yellow, Green & Red, Red & Yellow, Red & Yellow, Red & Blue, Red & Blue, Red & Blue, Red & Blue, Red & Blue, Yellow & Blue, Yellow & Blue, Yellow & Orange. You can pick any speed starting with 1 on to 5. I can't really tell what speed you should use, so it's better to experiment yourself. This cheat will enable playing with hyperspeed on guitar, bass & drums. Enter the following buttons to unlock it: Green-Blue-Red-Yellow (x2)-Red-Green (x2). To enter the 'cheat', go to the 'Options'-menu and select 'Cheats'. The chart will move faster, but the loves are more spreaded out which makes it easier to play. Cheats do not disable achievements (except for the Auto Kick-cheat), and I highly recommend playing with hyperspeed. It will effect your achievements in the end (since all songs need to be beaten on a particular difficulty), but you can finish career without any problems. If you keep failing a song over & over again, you might want to drop a level.
You can change difficulties between songs. That's why you might fail a song when you're doing pretty good. Just like the touch strip on guitar, the vocal registering system isn't worked out very well. If you want to play those on expert, I suggest you to practise a lot because they are really hard. The vocals are best done on beginner, but that's only because they are very easy there. It can be very hard in the later tiered songs, but with enough practice you might pull these off anyway. While going through career on drums, you might consider to take this a step further with a real drum. The drums are the best thing about this game: it's very similar to what's really played (except you only have two cymbals). Yeah, that's right: the touch strip doesn't work very well it's rather difficult to remember where the pad for the yellow colour is (where it's easy to remember on the fretboard). Tapping sections while playing a song on guitar are easier with the fretboard. If you can play guitar on expert, it's pretty obvious you can play bass on expert as well. If you can play medium guitar, you should try to play bass on hard. Bass guitar is by far the easiest of the instruments.

By starting on beginner, you will only need to strum and you will not learn how to use the fretboard.
It's better to start on easy and each time you think you are ready for it, you can go on to the next difficulty-level. Some start on the Beginner difficulty but I do not recommend it while playing guitar, bass or drums. Just like you now, everyone who has completed the game or is busy with completing it they needed to learn how to play this game. To fire them to the other player you need to tilt your controller (same as when you have enough star power). To new players: battles are played 1 vs 1, where you both have to play the same song and gain power by succesfully completing the power phrases (same as star power phrases). Battles already existed in Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock so if you're familiar with the series, you don't need explanation. There are new online features: Band vs Band, where you can play with 4 friends against another 4-player band and a 2 vs 2 Pro-Face Off, where you can play with 4 players in pairs of two.

The registration system between the mic and your mouth has a small delay, which can cause you to fail a song. Vocals, on the other hand, are very difficult in this game. It's very similar to playing a real drum and it doesn't take a long time to switch from an easy difficulty to a medium one. Drums are awesome, nothing to say about that.
New instruments in the game: drums & vocals. These notes are purple & easy to recognize. Bass isn't new, but another new feature are the open notes in bass: you just have to strum & don't hold any frets (colours left or right from the strumboard) to pull it off.
